"The Professor on the Sixth Floor: Homer E. Newell, Jr. and the Development
of U.S. Space Science"
This thesis presents the results of historical and biographic
research on Homer E. Newell Jr., who was a significant figure in the early
development of U.S. space science, from 1946 to his retirement in 1974.
Among other things, he created the procedures by which NASA selected
experiments for flight on unmanned spacecraft, which are still in use today.
