Extravehicular Activity (EVA) Emergency Aid for Planetary Missions: Through-The-Spacesuit Intravenous (IV) Administration
There is no question that with an increased presence in space, serious injuries/illnesses will occur, and their consequences will be potentially much more serious if these medical emergencies take place during an EVA. Though emergency EVA protocols will be to transport an ill/injured EVA crewmember to a pressurized safe haven for medical intervention, there may be situations where this will not be expeditiously possible. To increase the probability of survival, a through-the-spacesuit IV capability would allow for enhanced patient treatment during emergency EVA scenarios.Alex Diaz will provide a comprehensive overview of the original research he has carried out to propose the incorporation of an “IV fluid administration concept” into future spacesuit designs.
