Title: The Platform Social Media Offers Within the Space Science Field
About the topic: The National Space policy is one of the most important jobs each new administration is responsible for developing. With the National Space Policy set by the Obama administration still in place until the Trump administration sets theirs, I investigated how Social Media offers a platform to conveniently meet current policy expectations. The Space Science field is very complex and jargon filled, especially for those not directly in the field. Throughout my presentation I will cover what current space policy is, focusing in on the need to do a better job communicating the risks of Space Weather to the public and private sector along with the need for more research on this same subject. I demonstrate why I believe Social Media platforms serve as an excellent way to properly engage the public and educate them on the Space Science field, especially in 2017 where close to 90% of Male and Females own a smartphone. With smartphones also becoming such the norm for everyone to have, this has lead to the growing field of Citizen Science which has lead to numerous scientific discoveries and papers being published.
About the presenter: Mike Cook is a second year Graduate Student from New Jersey that is in the Space Studies program. In January, he will be starting his career as a Space Weather Forecaster at the Space Weather Operations Center on Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue, Nebraska. Mike earned a B.S. in Meteorology (2015) from Millersville University in Millersville, PA. Mike serves on the annual Space Weather Workshop planning committee that is held in Colorado and is passionate about communicating Space Weather to the public.
