SPACE STUDIES CELEBRATES 20TH ANNIVERSARY
The original faculty included Dr. Richard Parker, life sciences; James Vedda, military and commercial space; Joanne Gabrynowicz, space law and policy; and Dr. Grady Blount, remote sensing and planetary geology. Following Dr. Webb, chairpersons included Dr. Chuck Wood, Dr. Shan de Silva, and presently Dr. David Whalen. The original faculty members taught classes on campus and at the Grand Forks and Minot Air Force Bases. By 1996, the Department began offering classes through distance learning via the Internet. Distance learning has been extremely successful, and in 1998 the Department of Space Studies became the largest graduate program at UND. Since the inception of the Department, almost 600 students have received their graduate degrees in Space Studies.
Following the anniversary luncheon, the department also celebrated the 50th anniversary of the launch of the Sputnik satellite. Dr. David Whalen narrated a video and slide presentation about the Sputnik launch at the Clifford Hall Auditorium for the UND campus and general public.
