Space Studies introduces Dr. David Whalen as New Chairperson

David Whalen is the new chair of the Department of Space Studies. He received his Ph.D. from George Washington University in the area of Science, Technology and Public Policy. (GWU is a preeminent institution in policy studies.) He has over 30 years of administrative and engineering experience in satellite communication systems. His academic expertise and research interests are in space policy, space history and space economics. The Smithsonian Institution published his dissertation on the origins of satellite communications as a well-received book. He has teaching experience in space law and space economics and in the history of technology. Most of his career has been spent in the "real world" communication satellite industry so he brings to Space Studies both practical administrative experience and academic interests. His credentials in space policy and history make him extremely well suited for the multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary character of Space Studies.
