Title: Progressing Science, Math, Engineering, and Technology (STEM) in North Dakota through High Altitude Ballooning
An important driver for the global market of the twenty-first century is science and technology. The United States must provide quality science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education to keep up with its competitors. In order to increase the science proficiency in America, many STEM projects have focused on middle school curricula. Active-learning pedagogy prepares students for real-world jobs that require critical thinking.
This research analyzes the effectiveness of a STEM approach with the use of a high altitude balloon (HAB) project. One hundred and twenty four eighth-grade students from Valley Middle School in Grand Forks, North Dakota, participated in a month-long HAB payload mission. These students received first hand experience using the scientific method in this inquiry-based activity. The students formulated a hypothesis, designed and constructed their own experimental payloads to test their hypothesis. They flew these experiments onboard two high altitude balloons and are analyzing the post-launch data in order to produce a final science report.
A two-part self-assessment is being used to determine how much the students learned from the experience, as well as how much it changed their opinions about STEM subjects. This balloon project and research is funded by the North Dakota NASA Space Grant Consortium and approved by the Institutional Review Board at the University of North Dakota.
