Title: Variations of E-Region Total Electron Content and Electron Density Profiles Over High Latitudes During Winter Solstice 2007 Using Radio Occultation Measurements
The space weather phenomenon involves the Sun, interplanetary space and the Earth. Different space weather conditions have diverse effects on the various layers of the Earth’s atmosphere. Technological advancements have created a situation where human civilization is not only dependent on resources from deep inside the Earth, but also on the upper atmosphere and outer space region. The ionosphere significantly affects radio signal propagation at certain frequency due to its higher density of charged particles and ions, which can change rapidly during severe solar storms. Wireless communication, navigation systems, television broadcasting, electric power transmission lines, and oil and gas transmission lines are affected by the variation of ionization in the ionosphere. Therefore, it is essential to improve the understanding of the impacts of space weather conditions on the ionosphere. This research focuses on the variation of total electron content (TEC) and electron density profile within the E-region of ionosphere which extends from 80-150km above the surface of the Earth using radio occultation measurements and the Ionospheric Data Assimilation Four-Dimensional algorithm (IDA4D) during the winter solstice of 2007. Prominent E-region features (TEC and electron density) were observed during more active days than during the quiet days.
