Schiralli Interns at Helio Research Inc.
8/13/2012 Jonathan Schiralli, a second-year graduate student in the Space Studies department, has been working this summer at Helio Research Inc. with its creator, Sara Martin. Helio Research, located in La Crescenta, California, is a small organization that studies the Sun. They specialize in the study of filaments and prominences. With a 10-inch solar telescope, Jonathan observes and images features on the Sun at several wavelengths in order to process, align, compile and study the regions of interest. The unique, homemade telescope is equipped with a Lithium Niobate Etalon 0.1 Angstrom filter. High voltages are then applied to the filter making it possible to see the flow of material through Doppler shifts. In addition to observing the Sun, Jonathan is studying the topic of filaments/prominences to coincide with his thesis topic. This experience is giving him hands-on experience and knowledge from one of the top experts in the field of solar physics.
