Mr. Burke currently works at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) as a Business Manager for an Environmental Cleanup and Restoration project at NASA’s Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL). He started his federal career as an intern at the Library of Congress – Congressional Research Service (CRS) in the summer of 1998 and became a permanent civil servant with NASA through the Presidential Management Intern (PMI) program in June 1999. He has worked at three NASA centers including Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD (June – November 1999, & September 2000 - April 2001), NASA Headquarters in Washington D.C.(December 1999 – August 2000 and again May 2004 – May 2005), and Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL (May 2001 – May 2004 & May 2005 – Present).
Mr. Burke also served in the military reserves for over twenty years. He enlisted in the Army National Guard in June 1996 and attained the Cannon Fire Direction Specialist MOS (Military Occupation Specialty) from Fort Sill, Oklahoma in January 1997 and a Nuclear, Biological, Chemical Warfare Specialist MOS from Fort McClellan, Alabama in June 1998. He served in the National Guard of three states: Minnesota (June 1996 – August 1999); Maryland (September 1999 – November 2001); and Tennessee (December 2001 – July 2002). In August 2002, he was direct-commissioned as an Ensign in the Navy Reserve as an Intelligence Officer and assigned to a Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) unit at the Missile and Space Intelligence Center (MSIC) on Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama. From September 2006 to November 2007, LT Burke deployed in active duty status to Baghdad, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In December 2007, he came off active duty and returned to the DIA unit where he conducted various intelligence research. In May 2010, LT Burke again went on active duty to support the National Geospatial-intelligence Agency (NGA) in St. Louis, Missouri as a Mission Partner Liaison. In March 2011, LCDR Burke came off active duty and transferred to an Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) unit also at the MSIC in Huntsville, Alabama, where he served in various staff roles until retiring in January 2017.
Mr. Burke earned a B.A. in Political Science with a minor in Economics from the University of Minnesota in May 1995 and an M.S. in Space Studies from the University of North Dakota in May 1999. He is currently enrolled at the Nashville School of Law (night school) where he is pursuing a Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) degree.
