Dr. John M. Jurist
John M. Jurist is a biophysicist. Relevant interests include human factors in the
space environment with emphasis on musculoskeletal biodynamics and radiation biophysics.
An additional interest is space entrepreneurship.
At the University of California at Los Angeles, he earned a bachelor's degree in
physics in the College of Letters and Science with concentration in atomic and nuclear
physics. Then, in that institution's School of Medicine, he earned master's degrees
in biophysics and nuclear medicine, and a doctorate in biophysics. His postdoctoral
training in medical physics was obtained in the Department of Radiology at the University
of Wisconsin School of Medicine.
Dr. Jurist held a faculty appointment in the Division of Orthopedic Surgery at the
University of Wisconsin School of Medicine. He was also Associate Director of the
Biomedical Engineering Center at that institution. In the University of Wisconsin's
Space Science and Engineering Center, he led the first team to transmit medical
x-rays over satellite links in an early version of telemedicine. He has held the
positions of Adjunct Professor of Medical Science and Adjunct Professor of Electrical
Engineering at Montana State University, Adjunct Professor of Physics at Eastern
Montana College, and Visiting Professor of Physics at Rocky Mountain College in
Billings, Montana.
Among other professional associations, Dr. Jurist is a Life Member of the Space
Medicine Branch of the Aerospace Medical Association, a Life Member of the International
Association of Military Flight Surgeon Pilots, and an Emertius Member of the Orthopaedic
Research Society. He has been a member of the Section on Clinical Medicine of the
Gerontological Society since 1966 and was elected a Fellow of that society in 1977
in recognition of his contributions to understanding skeletal aging.
He served on the Biotechnology Subcommittee of the Advisory Council on Science and
Technology for the State of Montana and was a gubernatorial appointee to the State
Board of Health and Environmental Sciences. Dr. Jurist was the founding Scientific
Director of the Deaconess Research Institute in Billings and served as Vice-Chairman
and scientific representative on the Inter-institutional Review Board for the local
medical community. He served a term as Co-Chairman and is presently a member of
the National Advisory Council to Rocky Mountain College. He has been the CEO of
several corporations including an ambulatory surgical center and has invested in
several space startup corporations.
